“Fashion has to reflect who you are, what you feel at the moment, and where you’re going.” — Pharrell Williams.
One of the best things about fashion is its ability to repeat itself and make a bigger and bolder statement with its returning trend. Many of us might not know it but the majority of our wardrobe has been adopted from the 90s in a day and age where messy buns and overalls were being worn by everyone.
Here are some of the 90s fashion trends that are making a serious comeback:
The number of choker necklaces being advertised on Instagram is almost ridiculous. The choker which has been seen on many 90s music videos are making a comeback and Kenyan ladies can’t seem to get over them. They were very popular with girls. Maybe it’s time you went digging into your jewelry box to look for one.
2. The biker jacket.
It’s best known as the one jacket with endless possibilities and we just love how we can pair it with almost anything! The biker jacket has the ability to bestow a sexy look on the wearer.
3. Denim on denim.
This is probably one of the best trends in the fashion industry. We’ve all seen the number of celebrities rocking denim and years later, denim is here to keep proving that it’s a must have in your wardrobe. Demin is versatile and you can pair it with almost anything.
4. Skater dresses
Skater dresses are back and this time they’re more floral, have more bold prints and have pockets which is definitely an added bonus.
5. Crop tops
From Aaliyah to Destiny’s Child to Britney Spears, crop tops are some of the biggest fashion highlights back in the day and they are definitely making an impression especially in the soulful, indie loving community in Nairobi.
6. Flannel shirts
Nothing says a chilled out Saturday brunch like plaid t-shirts. Pair them up with a floral skater dress and a pair of sneakers and you’re good to go.
7. Round sunnies
We’ve seen Chimano of the boy band Sauti Sol rock them and there’s no shadow of a doubt that round sunglasses are just as stylish as they were with the boy bands of the 90s – and hopefully they’re here to stay.
What fashion trend from the 90s would you like to come back? I think bandanas should come back in a more stylish way.
