The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)arm of MTN , the MTN Ghana Foundation has taken another giant step by organizing the 6th Annual Blood donation exercise dubbed : ” Save Life Campaign” in the Ghana.
Since the the inception of the exercise, the MTN Foundation has collected over 3,715 pints of blood to support the National Transfusion Services and other regional hospitals.
Speaking at the 6th annual blood donation ceremony held in Accra, the Executive Director of MTN Ghana Foundation Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, hinted that six years ago , the Foundation responded to a distress call from the National Transfusion Services by organizing the first major blood donation exercise to restock the blood level at the National Blood Bank.
“We believe that as a result of this exercise we have been able to save many lives and we are very pleased about this achievement “, she said.
According to her, the World Health Organization has indicated that voluntary non-remunerated blood donors are the foundation of a safe , sustainable blood supply.
“They indicate that, without a system based on regular voluntary donation, no country can provide sufficient blood for all patients who require transfusion”, she noted.
According to the National Blood Bank, out of 250,000 pints of blood needed yearly and only 66% is donated voluntarily.
“Some regional hospitals have absolutely no blood in their banks. We also need to bear in mind that the life span of blood donated last for only 35 day so we all need to put in some extra efforts to help stock these hospitals; our ultimate goal is to Save lives”, she elucidated.
This she said, apart from helping to create a sustainable blood supply, there are also some vital health benefits relating to regular blood donation.
We are told that regular blood donation is beneficial in reducing heart and liver ailments caused by iron overload in the body and also helps in reducing obesity.
It is this regard that the MTN Ghana Foundation has for the past 6 years remained committed to helping increase stock blood levels at the National Transfusion Service and various hospitals in the country.
According to her, the foundation in a humble way started collecting blood from three bleeding centers in three regions including Accra, Takoradi and Kumasi.
“We are glad to announce that, the 6th edition of the exercise has been extended to all the 10 regions of Ghana with 12 bleeding centers which also symbolize a decade of the Foundation’s existence in Ghana”, she disclosed.
This year’s edition of the Save a Life Project has been dubbed “Operation 2017”.
The exercise is serving as a prelude for the celebration of the Foundation ‘s 10th Anniversary.
“We hoping to raise 2,017 pints of blood to save that pregnant woman who needs blood to save herself and her baby or that uncle , brother or mother who needs blood to survive “, she stated
According to Mrs.Cynthia Lumor, as an organization with a mission to brighten the lives of their customers, they owe it a duty to create awareness for voluntary blood donation and also to encourage all eligible persons to continue to donate blood regularly.
It is in this regard, the Foundation is championing the cause which is critical to numerous lives.
” With the Save a Life Project, MTN encourages staff and the general public to show love during the month of love by donating a pint of blood each year, on Valentine’s Day. Last year we exceeded our target of 1,200 by raising 1,645 pints of blood.
We hope to once again 2,017 pints or more this year” Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, emphasized
