There been plenty of gun drama in the country of late.
It’s like we are in the wild wild west. Last weekend, a US diplomat was arrested after brandishing a gun when he was flagged down by traffic police along University Way.
The diplomat was stopped because he had driven away from an accident he had caused earlier on Lusaka Road but instead of complying, he drew his gun and caused panic among passers-by. Police were forced to disarm him and take him to Central Police Station for questioning.
A police spokesperson said:
He is under arrest and now undergoing interrogation to determine if he was justified to draw out his gun when he was stopped. We want to establish if there is reason for him to face charges.
However, it might be hard to charge the guy since he enjoys diplomatic immunity. This a form of legal immunity that ensures diplomats are given safe passage and are considered not susceptible to lawsuit or prosecution under the host country’s laws, although they can still be expelled.
