The award presented by New African Soccer magazine recognizes the best African player in the English premier League every month.
The Tottenham midfielder beat Chelsea winger Victor Moses and Manchester City attacking midfielder Yaya Toure to claim the prestigious award.
The magazine reported:
“The Lion of Muthurwa’ has been solid for Tottenham, guiding them to a highly respectable place on the table and helping as they remain the side with the least losses in the league and the best defensive record so far. A lot of Tottenham’s resilience has been down to his input.”
Wanyama holds a record as the first ever East African player to score in the UEFA Champions League when he scored the first goal in Celtic’s 2–1 win over Barcelona on 7 November 2012. On 11 July 2013, Wanyama moved to Premier League club Southampton for £12.5 million making him the most expensive player sold by a Scottish club, surpassing the £9.5 million Russian club Spartak Moscow paid for Aiden McGeady in 2010. In 2016, he was signed by top English side Tottenham.
