Peacekeeping is a unique and dynamic instrument to help countries torn by conflict to create the conditions for lasting peace. So these soldiers from different countries are deployed to countries experiencing conflict to provide and sustain peace in the region.

Nigeria first provided UN peacekeepers to Congo (ONUC) from 1960 to 1964. Since then, Nigeria has been an active participant in UN peacekeeping missions having gone to over 25 missions. We do not often get to see these soldiers from way back so here’s a picture of the soldiers saying their goodbyes to families at Kaduna train station as they set to leave for Congo as a part of UN peacekeeping force in 1963.
