Rugby: Ghana Eagles Fly Over Togo Hawks 10-0…But It Was Not An Easy Rugby Game

The game of rugby was displaced at the high stage in Ghana when the nation hosted the Regional Africa Rugby Challenge West 1 at the Accra Sports Stadium from Sunday April 30 to May 7.

The other two nations involved in the international tournament were neighbours, Togo and Benin.

The Squirrels of Benin were no match for the Eagles of Ghana as they lost 5-46.

In the second group game Benin came back strongly to shock Togo with a 14-12 victory and they were very glad jubilating over the Silver medals.

The third group game was a real sporting combat as the Hawks would not allow the Eagles to have their way.

Both halves ended with a trial each for Ghana, who only managed a 10-0 win over Togo, with the Eagles playing very well, but committing petty technical errors that robbed them off the wide margin they hoped for.

Some of the Eagles who excited Yours Truly were, Emmanuel Carlos (13), Dan Hoppe(12), Theophilus Opare, Michael Arthur, Kweku Jason (22) and captain Angel Michael.

Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union congratulated the players, most of whom were tasting international tournament for the first time.

He said now that they have won the zone, they are looking forward for bigger events and challenges.

He thanked companies that supported the event when government gave them nothing, like Golden Tulip, Gino, Interplast, EverPure Mineral Water, Accra Brewery Ltd – Club Beer, Iqmenn, AMS, Golden Tulip Hotel and others.

The Media Partners include ModernGhana, GhanaWeb, Daily Guide, Starr FM and Peacefmonline.

Generally, the RARC West 1 was well organized and the media gave the event good coverage and publicity.

Captain Angel Michael of Ghana said they are not going to rest, but continue training to keep their form and focus on bigger challenges like the seven- side and the Commonwealth Games.
