Kumasi, May 09, GNA – A tanker driver caught with 607,514.21 grams of marijuana has been sentenced to 30 years imprisonment in hard labour by a Kumasi Circuit Court.
Alexander Kwabena Num, was charged with possessing narcotic drug without authority and he pleaded not guilty.
The psychoactive drug had been compressed into 575 large parcels and 19 mini-fertilizer sacks and concealed on a water tanker, he was driving on August 05, 2015.
The court, presided over, by Mrs. Lydia Osei Marfo, ordered the confiscation of the vehicle used to covey the huge quantity of marijuana.
She additionally, directed that the drug should be destroyed.
The trial Judge in her ruling said she took into consideration the fact that the convict knew of the destination of the drug but failed to lead the police to the place.
Again, he had custody of it, knew exactly what it was, but agreed to transport it, and also, his confession to the police that this was the second consignment he was transporting.
A State Attorney Yvonne Adjimah Adjare had earlier informed the court that the drug was intercepted by the police following a tip-off.
She added that sample sent for laboratory examination proved to be marijuana.
The convict in his caution statement claimed he had been contracted by one ‘Koo’ from Yabraso in the Brong-Ahafo Region to transport the drug to another person, whose name he only gave as ‘Red’ at Mamponteng, for a fee of GH¢1,000.00.
