It has not been long since a piece of unanticipated yet sad news hit Ghana and Africa at large. A great and an irreplaceable tree has been blown away by an uncaring storm about two days ago. Ghanaians and perhaps, Africa woke up to discover that another fearless, charismatic and courageous leader of Africa, Jerry John Rawlings has joined the silent majority. This news came as a surprise to many but what can one do when death knocks at the door?
Since the news of Rawlings’ demise broke out of the shell, numerous Ghanaian leaders including Nana Akufo-Addo and the former president, John Mahama have expressed their sincere condolences to the bereaved family and Ghana. Other influential leaders across the length and breadth of Africa and beyond have also shared their commiserations on the sudden loss of life of the Ex-president of Ghana.
As if that was not enough, Didier Drogba, an Ivorian retired professional footballer and a former player of Chelsea Football Club took to social media to express his heartfelt condolences to Ghanaians for the loss of Jerry John Rawlings.
On his Twitter page, the all-time top scorer of the Ivory Coast National team voiced his sincere condolences in a manner that got many people reacting to it. To Drogba, Rawlings was a strong believer of democracy, a leader who worked hard for a social and economic transformation while leading an exemplary life. This is exactly what he said;
“My sincere condolences to my dear Ghanaian Brothers for the loss of the President @officeofJJR. He was a strong believer of democracy, a leader who worked hard for a social and economical transformation while leading by example”.
Many Twitter users after seeing Drogba’s post, gave their reactions. Sunday Coastmann, one of the Twitter users, mentioned that beyond the condolences poured out by the former Chelsea ace, he had indeed proved himself a legend again. Coastmann added that a trying time like this in Africa, a unifying voice like Drogba’s is all that is needed to place the continent firmly on the path of growth. “Your message on Rawlings means a lot. Stay safe bro”, Coastmann finalized.
Nima Stonebwoy also used the opportunity to shower blessings on Didier Drogba. “May God continue to bless you with long life also”. Besides, he emphasized that the retired Ivorian star was his ever best striker in the premier league. See some of the mesmerizing comments that followed Didier Drogba’s tweet;
After many reactions to his words of condolence, the Ivorian star retweeted but this time it was a picture that sent many minds in retrospection, which he captioned as “What a picture”. As seen below, it was a picture showing the Late Nelson Mandela and JJ Rawlings in a convoy.
Like me, this was the first time seeing the two greatest leaders of Africa in one convoy. The reactions to this picture were superb. Let’s see how people reacted to this post on Twitter and how inspiring it has been to those who have seen it;
