At least four children, three of whom were from the same family, have been killed after they were hit by lightning in Tanzania’s southern highlands region of Rukwa, an official said Thursday.

Said Mtanda, Nkasi district commissioner in Rukwa region, said the three children from the same family were hit by lightning Wednesday at around 5 p.m. local time, while playing at their home’s backyard.

“The three victims were joined by their 11 neighboring friends playing hide-and-seek when the lightning hit them,” Mtanda told a news conference, adding that the 11 children escaped unhurt.

The official said the fourth victim was a primary school pupil who was killed after the lightning hit him in Nchenje village the same day. Enditem
