Prosecute ‘galamsey lords’ indicted in your gov’t first – CFF-Ghana to Akufo-Addo

Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) is challenging President Akufo-Addo to prosecute officials in his government indicted in illegal mining (galamsey) activities.

During his first term in office, the President made strides in the area of fighting illegal mining in the country to save water bodies and the green forest from destruction among other things.

However, all efforts has gone in vain due to ongoing galamsey activities in parts of the country where political actors are said to be involved.

Recently at a national consultative dialogue on illegal mining to build consensus in the fight against galamsey, President Akufo-Addo said he cannot prosecute people based on hearsay or ‘weak’ evidence.

Reacting to the President’s comments, CFF-Ghana says it is unable to comprehend the message the president intended to carry across especially because of the damning evidence provided in the Anas Aremeyaw Anas galamsey expose video.

The Civil Society Organisation insists that the inability of government to punish senior appointees who were accused of illegal mining deals clearly shows that there is no political commitment or will from President Akufo-Addo towards the fight against illegal mining.

CCF-gHANA is reiterating its call on President Nana Addo to show his commitment to dealing with galamsey in the country.

“…we are calling on the President of the Republic, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo to as a matter of urgency take action to prosecute ‘Galamsey Lords’ indicted in his government to deter others and prove to Ghanaians and the International community that, yes, he is truly committed to the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana,” part of the press release from CFF-Ghana reads.

PRESS STATEMENT

For Immediate Release

Prosecute indicted ‘Galamsey Lords’ to show political commitment towards the fight against illegal mining; Hypocrisy cannot win us the fight

Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has observed with sadness and disappointment the level of hypocrisy demonstrated in the fight against illegal mining in Ghana thus far.

Recently, a national consultative dialogue on illegal mining was held with the president in attendance for consesus building in the fight against galamsey. While we commend the organizers of the dialogue, our fears and doubts were further entreanched by the president’s statement that he cannot prosecute people based on hearsay or ‘weak’ evidence.

In fact, we are unable to comprehend the message the president intended to carry across. Does it mean the president of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo was not presented with or watched the explosive video authored by Anas Aremeyaw Anas which captured senior members of his government? Again, what has become of the investigations we were told were ongoing?

It is important to note that the propaganda machinery employed by government agents in the fight against illegal mining caused the country a great deal.

Its worth to note that, inability of government to punish senior appointees who were accused to be directly involved in the illegal mining business clearly shows that there is no political commitment or will towards the fight against the illegal mining.

In our candid opinion, we consider the shielding of appointed officials from punishment and the inhumane treatment including killing, molesting, seizure and burning of excavators meted out to other miners (non-political actors) and the kneejerk approach being employed in the fight against galamsey very hypocritical of the ruling class hence our failure to win the fight against galamsey.
