King Perryy Releases Official Music Video For “Yawa”

Dynamic Afro Fusion artist, King Perryy has released the highly anticipated music video for “Yawa,” a single taken off his debut album CITIZEN OF THE WORLD released in April. The official music video is directed by TG Omori (Wizkid, Burna Boy, Naira Marley, Tekno) who is one of the most sought-after video directors in Nigeria.

Shot to tug at the heartstrings, the video for “Yawa” features King Perryy pleading for the affection of his love interest while bringing emotive lyrics like, “Good vibes, I’m addicted to loving you” to life. The release of the music video is an addition to the singer’s collection of musical gems which have been praised by Rollingstone, Audiomack, Okay Africa, Pan African Music, and GRUNGECAKE.

Born Anthony Offiah, King Perryy stands out as one of the most distinctive and ambitious young acts in the Nigerian music scene. As the creator of what he calls the “continental sound,” a sub-genre characterized by the fusion of Afrobeats and Dancehall, the singer views himself as a citizen of the world. He explains, “The continental sound is a fusion of different genres, lifestyles and cultures. I’m not just from one place or Nigeria. I’m of the world.” This reflects in his music which is like a rainbow of sounds from different parts of the globe.

Dubbing himself “King Perryy” at the early stage of his career, he began releasing songs on Soundcloud while he was in college. One of his Soundcloud-released singles caught the attention of Nigerian afro-dancehall star Timaya who signed him to his label, DM Records. Perryy’s first studio session with Timaya resulted in his 2018 breakout hit, “Man on Duty.”

Over three years in the making, his debut album, CITIZEN OF THE WORLD features 17 tracks along with previously released records like, “YKTFV,” “Waist,” “Work ‘N’ Grind,” and “My Darlina.” The album is more than King Perryy’s debut project. It’s a manifesto and a mission statement for the way he sees the world. Sharing details behind the project’s title, he says, “Citizen of the World is an identity, a mind state. I found the title the moment I found myself.”
