I Expect ‘Legends’ to Criticise Me, Not Nobodies Like Amankwah Mireku – Asamoah Gyan

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan is taking a page from the John Dramani Mahama playbook by claiming that no one can criticise him unless they are legends of Ghanaian football.

In an interview with Angel Fm in Accra, Gyan said Mireku was a nobody who had achieved nothing, therefore he had no standing to criticise him and he felt he was using him to generate attention.

Former Hearts of Oak captain Yaw Amankwah Mireku, who led the side to conquer Africa in 2000, had attacked Gyan’s captaincy reign, saying that the 32 year old should be stripped of the armband and Andre Ayew elevated to the role.

Mireku said Gyan, “due to bad leadership… has dented the image of the national team.”
But in a sharply worded rebuttal Gyan attacked the credentials of a bonafide Hearts of Oak legend to argue back why he should not be stripped.

“I expect legends to talk about me on issues concerning the national team not people like him,” he told the Accra based radio station.

“Who knows Amankwah Mireku? He is nowhere near my level of achievements in football. At times, some of these people try to use me in order to gain attention from the public,” he added.

Gyan’s criticisms eerily echo a line once used by former President John Dramani Mahama, who claimed that only former leaders like Jerry Rawlings or J.A Kuffour could criticise his performance.

It was a stupid argument then as it is a stupid argument now, and it actually proves why Gyan is nowhere near anything resembling a good leader.
