Nepal buildings and Birmingham pool make a list of endangered heritage sites

  • The list, compiled by the New York-based World Monuments Fund, highlights sites under threat of damage
  • Grade II listed Moseley Baths in Birmingham and Grade I listed Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire on list
  • All of Nepal’s cultural sites were chosen after the devastating earthquake in April which killed more than 9,000

An Edwardian swimming baths in Birmingham, an ancient underwater city and the heritage buildings of Nepal have been placed on a list of the world’s most endangered cultural sites.

The list, compiled by the World Monuments Fund, a New York based conservation charity, also includes the Romanian city of Bucharest and breathtaking geoglyphs in South America.

Appearing on the list can be a blessing in disguise with funding for restoration often made available by the charity’s partners American Express.

British sites include the vast manor house Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire and the Moseley swimming baths in Birmingham, built in 1907.

However, while these buildings are both picturesque in their own unique way other monuments such as the Gon-Nila-Phuk cave temples in India and the ceiling of the Church and Covenant of San Francisco, Ecuador, are just as beautiful.

The sites on the list are under threat of damage caused by natural disasters as well human factors such as war, looting, and new urban development.

Nepal was chosen for the list after the devastating earthquake in April this year damaged many of its cultural heritage sites. The quake resulted in the deaths of more than 9,000 people and injured a further 23,000.
