A paraplegic man who lost his daughter to adoption has launched a desperate search to find her – 31 years after the one-night stand that led to her conception.
Jon Coats, 50, from Orange County, California, met his daughter’s mother at a friend’s bachelor party and they ended up having sex.
Soon after, the woman came and told him that she was pregnant. But when Jon suggested getting married, she said no and revealed that her parents were making her give up the child for adoption.

Sorry: Jon, from Orange County, California, who has recruited the help of TLC’s Long Lost Family, wants to find his daughter to apologize
Jon’s life took a tumultuous turn – including a near-fatal truck accident that left him partially paralyzed, addiction problems and trouble with the law.
Since then, Jon claims to have turned his life around and wants to find his daughter in the hope that she will forgive him and he can redeem himself.
Calling on the help of television show Long Lost Family, he now hopes to find his daughter.
‘We were at a bachelor party, my friend’s bachelor party, and we had met, we were interested in each other and it was her first time and near my first time as well and two months or a month later or so her mother came back and told me she was pregnant,’ he told the TLC program, to be aired on Sunday.
‘I said, “Well we need to get married,” and be the guy, you know, and she’s like, “Don’t be ridiculous, I don’t even know you’ and I said ‘well, learn’ so anyway she said that her parents were going to make her give her up for adoption.’
Tearful: In an emotional plea he said he wants to hug her and let her know that she was not unwanted
Trying to do the right thing: Jon, pictured in a recent Facebook image, explains on the show that he suggested to the mother of his daughter that they get married
Hopeful: Although Jon, pictured with a female friend, is aware that his daughter may not want to see him, he said that all he wants is the opportunity to ask her for forgiveness
When he sees her he plans to ask her for forgiveness.
He said: ‘I can ask her for her to forgive me, I hope she does…For not being there, that’s the biggest one of all. My dad was never really present, he just brushed me off, that was it, to be a father is so important to me.’
When asked whether he is comfortable with the possibility of rejection, he broke into tears, saying: ‘Just a hug, just a hug is all I need.’
In an emotional plea he said his daughter’s absence is ‘like a giant hole’ in his life and that he does not want her to think she was unwanted.
‘Women say that a guy can never know what it’s like to lose a child,’ he said.
‘Well this guy happens to know what it’s like, just like a giant hole and never been filled and I cannot let her go through life thinking that she was not wanted because that is the worst for anybody to have to go through.’
