Dramatic footage of a plane crash landing and exploding into a fireball as it skids down the runway at Aspen’s airport has been released.
Black and white video captured January 5 by infrared cameras at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport shows the moment a private plane slammed into the runway and killed one of three people aboard.
The video was made public Tuesday by non-profit Aspen Journalism after obtaining it via the Colorado Open Records Act.

Just before impact: The jet bounced off the runway and came back down at a poor angle
Multiple angles show the plane approaching the runway before the fateful crash that killed co-pilot Sergio Emilio Carranza Brabata.
Co-pilots Moises Carranza and Miquel Henriquez survived the crash. Moises Carranza was released last week from a hospital, but Mr Henriquez remains hospitalized in critical condition, according to NBC News.
Startling footage from one of the cameras shows the Bombardier Challenger 600 jet bouncing off the runway before landing again and exploding into a fireball.
Engines can be seen firing just before the crash, an indication one of the co-pilots may have attempted to abort the landing.
Fireball: It then slammed into the runway and exploded into a ball of flames
Lethal: The fireball grew larger as the plane skidded down the runway
Killer crash: The accident claimed the life of one of the three co-pilots aboard the private jet
The burning jet then slides down the runway as startled witnesses run outside to see the wreckage.
A rescue vehicle can also be seen arriving at the scene almost immediately after the botched landing.
The private jet had flown to Aspen from southern Mexico after a quick stop in Tucson, Arizona, according to reports.
Infrared cameras show heat as white light, and in one view the explosion takes up almost the whole screen.
The cameras were not pointed directly at the accident, there is no audio.
Horrified: Startled onlookers watched as the plane’s wreckage burned on the runway
Smoldering: Two people miraculously survived the crash, one of them remains hospitalized
Destroyed: The plane’s right wing was ripped off as it tumbled down the runway
One witness told the Aspen Times he sensed there was trouble before the plane touched down.
‘I saw a jet that didn’t look right,’ said Kirk Schoerthaler. ‘It was in a nose-high attitude close to the ground, then it went nose-down and quickly dropped towards the runway.
‘As soon as I saw that, I knew I needed to start responding and headed towards my truck,’ he added. ‘I didn’t wait for anything else.’
The plane crash was notably witnessed by multiple celebrities at the small airport just outside the popular ski resort known for attracting the rich and famous.
‘Horrible plane crash here at Aspen airport,’ former ‘Saturday Night Live’ star Kevin Nealon tweeted. ‘Exploded into flames as it was landing. I think it was a private jet.’
The National Transportation Safety Board is still investigating the crash.
