France train crash: School bus and train collide in 'serious rail accident' near Perpignan

Authorities say there has been a “serious rail accident” in southern France involving a school bus and a regional train.

Reports said three people had died, including two children, and that seven other people had been injured.

The Pyrenees-Orientales authority tweeted that the collision occurred on Thursday afternoon on a railway crossing at a small town about nine miles west of Perpignan, close to the border with Spain.

Emergency services have been deployed to the site of the accident.

The country’s transport minister, Elizabeth Borne, said she would travel immediately to the crash site.

“Emergency and public services are fully mobilised,” she said on Twitter, describing the crash as a “terrible accident”.
