Transfer news, rumours LIVE: Arsenal Aubameyang latest plus Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs

The January transfer window is nearing its climax with Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and more expected to be busy before the deadline.

Alexis Sanchez is finally a Manchester United player and made his debut as his new side swept aside Yeovil on Friday night. Jose Mourinho isn’t stopping there though with a new central midfielder now on his shopping list. Arsenal are bedding Henrikh Mkhitaryan in but Arsene Wenger is keen to add at least one more new face before the window shuts with deals for Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and West Brom’s Jonny Evans set to go down to the wire.

Manchester City are closing in on a new central defender with Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte set to arrive imminently while Chelsea’s search for a new striker continues with talks over Roma’s Edin Dzeko ongoing. Could Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud arrive instead before the month is out?

We will have all the latest news throughout the day right here.

Michael Carrick says new signing Alexis Sanchez is already a “proper Manchester United player”.

“He is not bad, is he? Not bad for a little man,” he said. “He is going to be a terrific player. He is a proper Manchester United player and it’s great to have him here. He is so exciting and so dynamic.

“He’s always looking to create opportunities, to play forward, and the fans are going to enjoy watching him.

“Hopefully, we will enjoy playing with him.”

Cristiano Ronaldo says he is “still handsome” after his face was left covered in blood from being kicked in the face against Deportivo La Coruna last week and declared he wants to remain at Real Madrid despite suggestions that he is unhappy in Spain.

The image-conscious Portuguese was seen checking his blood-drenched face on the mobile phone of a club doctor as he left the pitch injured last Sunday following the clash and he required three stitches above the eye.

“Players often hit me in games because they have to stop me but this time I wasn’t so lucky,” Ronaldo said.

“Now I feel better, I am still happy, I am still handsome and my vision is as clear as before so there’s no problem.”

Benjamin Mendy is set for an imminent return from injury for Premier League leaders Manchester City, according to team-mate and ‘doctor’ Phil Foden.

Mendy, who joined City for a reported £49.4million deal from Monaco last summer, has been sidelined with a serious knee injury since September which was set to rule him out for the rest of the season, but Foden gave a positive update for the left-back.

City posted the video below where the France international filmed the 17-year-old giving him a prognosis of ‘a couple weeks’ until he can return to action.

Foden has been spending plenty of time in the treatment room himself having been sidelined with ankle ligament damage since December, but there are still questions about his knowledge of medical science so Mendy may want to seek a second opinion.

Alexis Sanchez‘s defensive “fight” can set him apart at Manchester United, according to team-mate Ander Herrera.

Sanchez laid on two goals in a man-of-the-match debut as United coasted past Yeovil 4-0 at Huish Park on Friday, strolling into the FA Cup fifth round.

The Chile forward teed up Marcus Rashford and Herrera for goals, before Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku glossed the scoreline late on.

Allied to Sanchez’s attacking prowess, Herrera believes the ex-Arsenal star’s grit for teamwork will prove a huge asset to United.

Manchester City fans could be left shocked at the prospect of losing their star striker, Sergio Aguero.
The Sun reports that a possible deal may be in place to send the Argentinian back to Atletico Madrid in the summer.
While it would seem unlikely boss Pep Guardiola would want to lose the 29-year-old, the Spanish club are looking for someone to team up with Diego Costa, and Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann is on City’s radar – setting up a possible switch, the paper says.

The key purchases at Manchester United are set to be in central midfield as Jose Mourinho seeks a long-term replacement for the retiring Michael Carrick and wants to boost his options.

Jean-Michel Seri of Nice has become the main target while Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, a target of rivals City, is an option. United are also confident of doing a deal for 20-year-old Carlos Soler from Valencia, and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl. The signing of Sanchez likely means they won’t pursue interest in Christian Pulisic as strongly.

The potential departure of Marouane Fellaini could well further influence things, but Mourinho may well go for another striker if the Belgian does leave. Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the season

Roma’s Edin Dzeko will continue to feature in Eusebio Di Francesco’s side despite nearing a January switch to Premier League champions Chelsea.

Di Francesco has confirmed he has no plans to drop the forward amid uncertainty over the Bosnian’s future at the Stadio Olimpico.

Speaking in the wake of Roma’s 1-1 with Sampdoria on Wednesday, the Italian praised Dzeko’s commitment to the cause and insisted the forward would remain in his starting XI until he leaves the club.

Arsene Wenger wants Olivier Giroud to stay at Arsenal but refused to rule out the possibility of the Frenchman leaving before the transfer window closes.

Giroud has been linked with a move away from the Emirates after falling behind summer signing Alexandre Lacazette in the striking pecking order.

Chelsea are the latest club to be linked with a loan approach this month with Borussia Dortmund another possible destination if a deal to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang the other way can be finalised.

Wenger remains a fan of Giroud and would be happy if he was still an Arsenal player once Wednesday’s deadline passes.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has played down reports linking him with a move away from the club.

The 31-year-old, who in the summer of 2016 turned down the chance to join Arsenal, has this month been linked with Everton and reigning Premier League champions Chelsea.

Chelsea are known to be looking for another striker as Blues boss Antonio Conte wants to ease the burden on Alvaro Morata.

But ahead of Leicester’s FA Cup fourth-round tie away at League One side Peterborough on Saturday Vardy insists he is committed to the Foxes.

How did Alexis Sanchez fare on his Manchester United debut?
Mark Critchley cast his expert eye over it for us:

Real Madrid are planning a summer of “major renovation”, centred around top target Neymar, whose move is to be funded by high-profile sales set to have a big impact on the Premier League.

Bernabeu sources say there has been a realisation of the need to overhaul the top end of the squad, and an awareness that the time of the BBC – Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo – has come to an end.

While president Florentino Perez did not bring in a major star in the last two summers and wanted to rectify that this year anyway, he now feels Neymar could be the signing that solves a lot of issues. The Brazilian would be both the massive name the president craves, but also young enough to make sense as the player that represents a new era. There is also an unusual confidence around the Bernabeu that it can be pulled off, despite Paris Saint-Germain’s expected refusal.

Chelsea left-back Baba Rahman looks to be on his way back to Germany.
Sky Sports report that the Ghana international is set to join Schalke on an 18-month loan after spending last year there too.
Head coach Dominico Tedesco certainly sounds confident.
“When we get the go-ahead from Chelsea, it won’t take more than a minute to talk with Baba,” he says.

Manager Jose Angel Ziganda says Aymeric Laporte has not told him he is moving to Manchester City despite deciding to leave him out of the Athletic Bilbao squad for the game with Eibar on Friday night.

The 23-year-old central defender has been a near ever-present for Basque club this season and was originally named in Ziganda’s 20-man squad for the LaLiga clash.

However, Laporte was one of two players who dropped out of that group on Friday and played no part as the teams drew 1-1.

Luke Shaw’s application has saved his Manchester United career, with his form persuading an impressed Jose Mourinho to drop his interest in buying a left-back.
There had been various points over the past year and a half when the Portuguese had been fed up with Shaw, often leaving him on the sidelines for extended periods and publicly criticising him.
The expectation was that the left-back would be available for sale in the summer, only to have to go undergo a surgery, and Mourinho still wanted to bring in one of Juventus’ Alex Sandro or Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose, even after the 22-year-old showed a renewed vigour on his return.

LIVERPOOL NEWS

Jürgen Klopp has warned Daniel Sturridge that he cannot promise him playing time in the coming months if he decides to stay at Liverpool.

Sturridge’s five-year spell at Anfield could come to an end this month as Sevilla and Internazionale vie for his signature, though a temporary loan move is understood to be more likely than a permanent departure.

The 28-year-old has struggled to earn regular minutes out on the pitch under Klopp this season and faces an uphill task to win a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Sturridge is willing to move abroad in order to secure regular first-team football and Klopp reminded the striker on Friday that if he remains at Liverpool beyond the 31 January deadline, there will be no guarantees that he plays.

Manchester City are pushing to sign Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred before the summer.

The league leaders are looking to add a No.6 as cover for Fernandinho with Yaya Toure likely to leave at the end of the season.

And the Daily Telegraph report that City fear the deal could ratchet up in price and want it done before the World Cup.

Arsenal are “far from being close” to signing Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or any other player after completing the swap deal to bring Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Emirates Stadium, but Arsene Wenger refused to rule out landing the Gabon international before the January window closes at the end of the month.

The Premier League club have sent chief executive, Ivan Gazidis, chief scout Sven Mislintat and contract negotiator Huss Fahmy to Dortmund to hold talks with the Bundesliga side over a possible transfer for the unsettled Aubameyang, although negotiations so far have been unsuccessful.

Dortmund officials are holding out for €70m before allowing Arsenal to speak with the player, who has grown increasingly unhappy at the Signal Iduna Park this season, but Arsenal are hoping to agree a deal closer to the €50m mark, leaving the German side unimpressed with the money being offered.

Antonio Conte kept his counsel on Chelsea’s transfer policy as the head coach hinted Ross Barkley would make his full debut in Sunday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie with Newcastle.

Following Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final loss at Arsenal, Conte did little to hide his frustration at a lack of recruitment, with Barkley’s £15m purchase from Everton on January 5 the only incoming player so far this month.

Conte said on Wednesday: “The club decide our transfer market. From the summer, the club decides every single player.”

Asked whether any arrivals can be anticipated, Conte took his usual stance to defer to the club.
