Transfer news LIVE: Arsenal set to sign Aubameyang, Chelsea striker chase plus Manchester United, Liverpool and Spurs

The January transfer window is reaching its climax with Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool right in the thick of it.

Arsenal remain intent on adding at least one more new face before Wednesday’s deadline with a deal for Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set to go down to the wire. He could be joined at the Emirates by Jonny Evans of West Brom after Manchester City turned their attentions to Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte instead.

Manchester United finally have their hands on Alexis Sanchez but Jose Mourinho is in the market for a central midfielder and could pull the trigger before the month is out. Nice’s Jean Michael Seri is his No 1 target with Valencia’s Carlos Soler and Dortmund’s Julian Weigl also being considered. Chelsea still want a striker but with a deal for Roma’s Edin Dzeko stalling could Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud be a wildcard last minute option?

We will have all the very latest for you throughout the day.

Jürgen Klopp has suggested that Emre Can may well run down his contract and leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of the season.

“He’ll stay beyond the winter,” Klopp told DAZN, in quotes reported by Sky Sports. “Emre is still a young lad but he has developed into a great player and is very important for us.

“Sometimes a player just wants to sit out his contract. That’s not cool for the club, but there are moments in which you have to accept it.

“And as long as the player behaves like Emre does, then I have absolutely nothing to complain about. He gives everything he has and identifies with the club.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be allowed to leave Manchester United before the end of the season if he wishes to, according to Jose Mourinho.

The United manager said that the club are “here to help” if, as speculation on Monday suggested, Ibrahimovic is ready to swap Old Trafford for the United States.

LA Galaxy are reported to be interested in signing the 36-year-old striker, who has struggled to fully recover from a serious knee ligament injury sustained last April.

Pep Guardiola has stressed Vincent Kompany‘s importance to Manchester City after welcoming his skipper back into the first-team fold.

Kompany returned for City’s 2-0 FA Cup win at Cardiff on Sunday – the first time the Belgian defender has featured since limping off at Newcastle on December 27 with a muscular injury.

He completed 90 minutes for only the second time in two months, and Guardiola was delighted that Kompany had got through his latest comeback.

“He did 90 minutes and it is a long time that he played in this kind of game,” said Guardiola, who could add to his defensive options by signing Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte before the transfer deadline on Wednesday night.

“It was a lot of long balls, a lot with the physicality. Vincent is so important and he did a good performance.”

Liverpool could pursue Monaco’s Keita Baldé as an alternative to Thomas Lemar.

Liverpool’s interest in Lemar is well-established but his asking price of more than £90m has so far proved too steep.

Former Lazio wide forward Baldé would not cost as much to bring to Anfield, though the Senegal international has reportedly attracted interest from Napoli.

Antonio Conte is rumoured to be at odds with the Chelsea hierarchy over transfers.

But the Blues boss was happy to do as instructed against Newcastle by fielding two 17-year-olds against Newcastle. Ethan Ampadu is becoming something of a regular, but Callum Hudson-Odoi made his debut.

“The club asked me to work with the young players, to improve them and also if there is the opportunity, to give them a chance,” Conte added.

“Ampadu is a reality. He’s not a young player. I think he’s becoming an important player for us, because he can play midfield, as a central defender on the right on the left.

“He’s only 17 years old. I think he is fantastic news for the club.”

Chelsea are now looking at Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and Leicester City’s Islam Slimani as their hunt for an alternative striker goes on, with the hopes of signing Edin Dzeko from Roma receding.

Manager Antonio Conte had been keen on the Bosnian international, but it became apparent over the weekend that a deal would be difficult to strike, leading to the champions looking at other options.

The move could yet spark a late transfer window merry-go-round, as Chelsea have also been contacted by Borussia Dortmund over the availability of Michy Batshuayi, but will not let him go on loan unless they get an alternative.

Giroud, however, could become a viable option if Arsenal complete a move for Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as the French striker would want regular football, but Arsene Wenger would rather send him to a foreign club.

Luke Shaw’s application has saved his Manchester United career, with his form persuading an impressed Jose Mourinho to drop his interest in buying a left-back.
There had been various points over the past year and a half when the Portuguese had been fed up with Shaw, often leaving him on the sidelines for extended periods and publicly criticising him.
The expectation was that the left-back would be available for sale in the summer, only to have to go undergo a surgery, and Mourinho still wanted to bring in one of Juventus’ Alex Sandro or Tottenham Hotspur’s Danny Rose, even after the 22-year-old showed a renewed vigour on his return.

Newcastle have made an enquiry about Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan.

It is understood the Magpies have made contact over the 28-year-old England international, but that discussions are still at an early stage and his wages could prove a significant obstacle.

The move comes with the club’s pursuit of Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen having hit an impasse over the two clubs’ respective valuations of the player.

Sturridge has made only 14 appearances for the Reds and has scored three goals to date this season and although he has been linked with a move away, manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted he is going nowhere.

Record signing Philippe Coutinho will need time to settle into the Barcelona side after he made a quiet La Liga debut in a 2-1 win against Alaves on Sunday.

All eyes were on the £142m man but he was substituted in the second half for striker Paco Alcacer as Barca chased the game after falling behind to John Guidetti’s 23rd minute opener, eventually mounting a comeback with goals from Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi.

“Players aren’t machines that you can just put in a factory and start to work right away,” manager Ernesto Valverde said.

“I thought he played well, he was always asking for the ball. He has important skills, the other day he played 20 minutes, today he played a little more, he’s growing into the team little by little.”

The key purchases at Manchester United are set to be in central midfield as Jose Mourinho seeks a long-term replacement for the retiring Michael Carrick and wants to boost his options.
Jean-Michel Seri of Nice has become the main target while Shakhtar Donetsk’s Fred, a target of rivals City, is an option. United are also confident of doing a deal for 20-year-old Carlos Soler from Valencia, and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl. The signing of Sanchez likely means they won’t pursue interest in Christian Pulisic as strongly.
The potential departure of Marouane Fellaini could well further influence things, but Mourinho may well go for another striker if the Belgian does leave. Fellaini is out of contract at the end of the season.

Chelsea left-back Baba Rahman looks to be on his way back to Germany.
Sky Sports report that the Ghana international is set to join Schalke on an 18-month loan after spending last year there too.
Head coach Dominico Tedesco certainly sounds confident.
“When we get the go-ahead from Chelsea, it won’t take more than a minute to talk with Baba,” he says.

Manchester City fans could be left shocked at the prospect of losing their star striker, Sergio Aguero.
The Sun reports that a possible deal may be in place to send the Argentinian back to Atletico Madrid in the summer.
While it would seem unlikely boss Pep Guardiola would want to lose the 29-year-old, the Spanish club are looking for someone to team up with Diego Costa, and Atletico striker Antoine Griezmann is on City’s radar – setting up a possible switch, the paper says.

Internazionale’s sporting director has played down reports linking the Serie A club with a move for Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.

Sturridge could bring his five-year long stay at Anfield to an end in the coming days as he searches for regular first-team football away from Merseyside.

The 28-year-old was left out of the matchday squad for Saturday’s 3-2 FA Cup defeat to West Bromwich Albion, amid speculation linking him with a move abroad.

Inter were considered to be Sevilla’s main rivals for the striker’s signature, but the club’s sporting director Piero Ausilio appeared to pour cold water on any interest in Sturridge over the weekend.

“I don’t feel that I should cancel anyone from the list of possibilities, but in terms of the attack we have the players we are content with and can go forward like this,” he said.

Some more news for Arsenal fans and, according to Bild, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be announced as a Gunners player today.
Yes, that’s right today.
They say the Gabon international has agreed personal terms to be the richest player in the club’s history with Arsenal paying £55m to get him plus bonuses.
That would be also be a club record eclipsing the £52m they paid for Alexandre Lacazette in the summer.
It is also suggested that Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi, rather than Olivier Giroud, will be the man to replace him.
We will be keeping a close eye on this one so don’t touch that dial.

With a medical passed, all that is left to finalise Vicente Guaita‘s move from Getafe to Crystal Palace is agreement on when it will take place.
The Daily Mail reports that talks are still ongoing on whether the 31-year-old will join Palace for free in the summer or at the end of this January’s transfer window – but with a £3.5million release clause in tow.

MANCHESTER UNITED NEWS

The signing of Alexis Sanchez has freed up Manchester United’s short-term transfer plans, with midfield now the priority area.

With the Chilean having been previously been expected to go to Manchester City, the Old Trafford hierarchy had wanted a winger, a striker and a star name but Sanchez effectively ticks all those boxes and allows different potential formations in attack.

United still want the new signing’s former teammate Mesut Ozil, whose Arsenal contract is up in the summer, but it is understood he would be seeking wages of over £300,000 a week.

WATFORD NEWS

Richarlison is angling for a summer move away from Watford, with his representatives holding talks with both Chelsea and Arsenal, the Watford Observer reports.

The Vicarage Road side have said he will not be leaving in January which leaves the window open to a move at the end of the season, the paper said.
There are even further suggestions that the Hornets have slapped him with a £50m price tag to ward off potential suitors this month.
