Police are responding to an active shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and have warned residents to stay away from the area until the area is secured.
The school is on lock down, and local news has reported that a number of people could be seen being loaded into ambulances on a stretcher.
“Shooter still at large,” the Broward County Sheriff department said in a tweet just after 3 pm local time.
One student was texting with a CBS reporter from inside a closet in the school, and described a chaotic scene.
“All of a sudden there was a really loud noise… people are crying in the closet,” the student told the reporter.
It was not immediately clear who the shooter was, how many shooters there were, and whether there were any fatalities.
The White House says that President Donald Trump has been made aware of the situation in Florida, according to Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters.
“We are monitoring the situation,” Ms Walters said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.”
