The daily gossip: Let’s talk about that explosive Harry and Meghan interview!

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, it was their second time around. During their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired on CBS on Sunday night, Meghan revealed that the pair actually were married three days before their wedding, which was televised to millions of people around the globe. The private ceremony was conducted in their backyard by the Archbishop of Canterbury, with no one else present. Meghan added that on the day of their wedding at Windsor Castle, the couple tried to keep things “fun and light and remind ourselves that this was our day — but I think we were both really aware, even in advance … [that this] was the day that was planned for the world.” [CBS News, The Week]

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex said racism was a “large part” of their reason for leaving the U.K. in 2020. As Meghan Markle explained to Oprah Winfrey on Sunday night, there were “concerns and conversations” in the royal family about “how dark” their son Archie’s “skin might be when he was born,” since Meghan is half-Black. Meghan and Prince Harry refused to name who the person was that voiced the concerns, claiming, obviously, that it would be “very damaging to them.” But on CBS This Morning, Oprah said that Prince Harry “wanted to make sure that I knew” that Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip weren’t a part of such conversations. In one of the most heartbreaking parts of Sunday’s interview, Meghan Markle revealed that she had “methodical” thoughts of suicide after marrying into the royal family. It was “very clear” and “frightening,” Meghan said. “I couldn’t be left alone.” She described feeling captive, as her passport and credit cards were taken away after she married Prince Harry, and it seemed she “could not feel lonelier.” Meghan said she went as far as to ask senior officials for help, and mentioned being hospitalized, but was told it would look bad for the royals. This, she said, is why people should always show kindness to others, because no one knows what’s going on “behind closed doors.” [CBS News, The Week]

Prince Harry gave an honest assessment of his relationship with his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William, telling Oprah Winfrey that he has “compassion” for both of them because they are “trapped” inside the royal family. Harry explained that he is “disappointed” in his father, and does not think the family did enough to protect his wife from bad press. “I saw history repeating itself,” he said, referring to his mother, the late Princess Diana, who was hounded by tabloids. Harry said he asked for help, but Charles stopped answering his calls. Had he received assistance, “we wouldn’t have left,” Harry said, but “we did what we had to do.” As for William, Harry said he loves his brother “to bits,” but “we’re on different paths.” [CBS News, The Week]

Big news: Archie is getting a younger sister. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle revealed that they’re expecting a daughter, due this summer, while speaking Sunday with Oprah Winfrey. Though their daughter is technically entitled to be a Lady, The Daily Mail reports that, as with 22-month-old Archie, the parents are opting out against the stylization, with their daughter being “a plain Miss, with the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.” Already there is rampant speculation that the Sussexes will name their daughter Diana, after Harry’s mother, the late Princess Diana. “To have a boy and then a girl, I mean, what more can you ask for?” marveled Harry. “Now we’ve got our family, we got the four of us, and our two dogs.” [The Daily Mail]
